Google Scholar Indexing for DSpace & DSpaceDirect

Overview

Lyrasis Hosting can request an initial crawl of hosted DSpace repositories whose content primarily includes journal articles to support indexing in Google Scholar.

Please note:

  • We can request that your site be included in a crawl.

  • Google Scholar cannot guarantee that all sites or all articles will be indexed.

  • Google Scholar specifies that indexing depends on factors such as:

    • Site availability

    • Repository configuration

    • Metadata quality

    • Google Scholar’s indexing processes

For DSpaceDirect Clients

DSpaceDirect is configured to meet the technical requirements for indexing by:

  • Google

  • Google Scholar

However, indexing decisions are ultimately made by Google Scholar.

How to Request an Initial Crawl

If your hosted DSpaceDirect repository primarily includes journal articles and you would like it to be crawled:

  1. Submit a hosting support request to Lyrasis by emailing dpacedirect@lyrasis.org or via Zendesk.

  2. Include:

    • Your repository URL

    • Confirmation that the primary content type is journal articles

    • Any relevant details about recent content additions

We will submit a crawl request on your behalf.

If Articles Are Not Appearing in Google Scholar

If you notice that specific articles are not indexed or are indexed incorrectly:

Step 1: Review Google Scholar’s Inclusion Guidelines

Google Scholar provides technical guidance here:

https://scholar.google.com/intl/en/scholar/inclusion.html#overview

Ensure your repository content and metadata align with these requirements.

Step 2: Contact Google Scholar Directly (If Needed)

If you believe there is a technical indexing issue on Google Scholar’s side, contact them directly:

Email: scholar-support@google.com

Include:

  • Specific example article URLs

  • A description of the issue

  • Screenshots (if helpful)

Lyrasis Hosting does not control Google Scholar’s indexing decisions.

Important Notes

  • Inclusion in Google Scholar is not automatic.

  • Not all content types are prioritized equally.

  • Google Scholar independently determines indexing scope and frequency.

If you have questions about your repository configuration, metadata exposure, or indexing readiness, please submit a hosting support ticket and we’ll be happy to review.
